How to Migrate to DEVONthink To Go 4

Last week, we released the next generation of our app for iPhone and iPad, DEVONthink To Go 4.0 Kepler. Since version 4 is a separate app in the App Store, you may be wondering how to migrate your data. The migration is a very simple process, done in just a few steps.

Installation

Before proceeding, make sure to update version 3 to the most recent version.

  1. Do not start off by uninstalling DEVONthink To Go 3. Leave it alone for now.
  2. Install version 4 from the App Store.
  3. Launch version 4. It will migrate resources, settings, and databases from version 3. You should see a message about the database being updated. When finished, check that the databases arrived fine. You can now quit the app.
  4. Now long-press the version 3 app and remove it. When prompted, remove the application data as well.

Licensing

Now, you need to handle the licensing as the application is in trial mode. Launch version 4, tap the Action button (…), and choose Settings. In the License & Account settings, tap License. If a previous purchase or subscription is detected, it should show up here.

If you have bought the one-time purchase for DEVONthink To Go 3 on or after January 1st, 2024, version 4 treats it like a free license valid until the end of 2026. It will not automatically become a paid subscription, DEVONthink To Go will just ask you eventually to choose what you want to do next.

Starting with DEVONthink To Go 4, you can also use your license for DEVONthink Pro or Server 4 to register DEVONthink To Go. In the License & Account settings, tap Account. Log into your DEVONtechnologies account. Once you’re signed in, it will switch to the License pane. To attach a seat, tap the Register button to the right of your license. Enter a recognizable name for the device, e.g., Work iPad. The device is now linked to your DEVONthink license.

Note: If you have an active subscription, you’ll need to cancel it and wait for the trial period to elapse before proceeding. You can find more information about licensing in our Upgrader's Guide.
