How to Master an Application

We often hear people talking about the “steep learning curve” of DEVONthink and how hard it is to “master”. DEVONthink is undoubtedly a comprehensive application with many features and ways of working. But what does it actually mean to really master any application?

Using DEVONthink as an example, imagine it as a workshop with a lathe, drill press, various saws, sanders, routers, etc. So you have the tools to create finished cabinetry and furniture. However, you’re just creating bird houses and you can produce those items quickly and efficiently. So regardless of what tools you’re not using, you have mastered making bird houses. You are the master of the things you need to master. And maybe you’ll never create a dining room table, but at least you have the tools at hand, should you need them in the future.

For the most part, there will always be more things to learn on almost any subject. Whether it’s a new technique in playing an instrument, more studies for flight training, or a command you’ve never used in an application, our knowledge is always somewhat incomplete. “Mastery” does not mean you know every last detail about a subject and can never learn more. It means you can use your current knowledge, on-demand and effectively. So ask yourself, “Am I able to accomplish my goals efficiently?” If the answer is “Yes”, you have achieved mastery.

We hope this helps dispel some of the mythology surrounding DEVONthink and also encourages you. And this lesson about mastery applies to other applications, as well as other areas of your life.
