A Fresh New Global Inbox

January 10, 2017 — Jim Neumann

The Global Inbox is a built-in database, provided so you can start working (or playing!) in DEVONthink the moment you launch it. For DEVONthink Pro and Pro Office, it is ideally used as a temporary storage location — a place for transient or unfiled data. It’s a great place to capture miscellanous data when you’re rabbit-trailing around the web too.

But, with all such “temporary locations”, the temporary state becomes “permanent” as we forget to go through and file the things we’ve collected… even if it’s filing it in the trash! To get a fresh start with a new Global Inbox in DEVONthink Pro or Pro Office,

  1. Quit DEVONthink.
  2. In the Finder, press ⇧⌘G and paste: ~/Library/Application Support/DEVONthink Pro 2
  3. Rename the Inbox.dtBase2 file to something that makes sense to you. (I use a simple Inbox_02.dtBase2 scheme.)
  4. Then move that database to where your other databases are (most safely, in a folder in your home folder).
  5. Double-click to launch it, if you’d like to use it now.

When you launch DEVONthink, a brand new Global Inbox will be created — fresh and ready to fill back up.

For the DEVONthink Personal owners in the crowd: Sorry, but this isn’t possible for you, as there is only the Global Inbox available for you.
