DEVONthink to Adopt Blockchain Technology
The most-discussed new technology in the last few years is clearly the Blockchain. While it’s best known as the basis for Bitcoin it’s main advantage is its highly decentralized approach to data storage. Data is added in encrypted form to a robust chain of byte blocks that make tempering with it impossible. Reliable versioning comes with the approach as a free extra, and as all data is not only stored locally but also on an uncountable number of other computers world-wide data loss is something no longer worth thinking about.
This makes the blockchain ideal for data-centric applications like DEVONthink. Starting today, April 1st, 2018, the synchronization built into DEVONthink will, in addition to the sync locations you’ve set up yourself, add your data in 256-bit encrypted form to the DEVONthink Blockchain. To opt out of this new service simply uncheck Add to blockchain in DEVONthink’s Preferences > Sync.
As the blockchain is basically duplicated to all participating computers and data is never deleted from it but only added, the disk space needed for the synchronization will slightly increase after activation. The data stored in DEVONthink is a lot larger than the simple transactions in the Bitcoin blockchain but as we use efficient compression we don’t expect it to grow more than than two Petabytes per year in the beginning. Also, calculating new blocks is a CPU-intensive task so you might want to leave your computer running over night and switch to a reasonable-priced electricity provider.
