Press Release

DEVONthink 3.9

February 9, 2023 — Eric Böhnisch-Volkmann

Coeur d’Alene, Idaho — DEVONtechnologies updates its documentation and information manager DEVONthink. Version 3.9 adds deep linking to annotations and selections in PDFs, rearranges and improves some inspectors, and enhances working with annotations in general. Searches from the toolbar can omit subgroups, the Sorter supports WYSIWYG Markdown editing, and the Share menu is available from the context menu. Version 3.9, of course, also improves the overall performance and reliability.

DEVONthink is DEVONtechnologies’ document and information management solution. It supports a large variety of file formats and stores them in a database enhanced by artificial intelligence (AI). Many document formats can be directly viewed, edited, and annotated. A powerful search language finds documents in an instant, smart groups keep them always at hand.

Sophisticated organization tools, AI-based techniques that handle even the largest collections, and numerous integration options make DEVONthink the work environment of choice for researchers, lawyers, journalists, writers, and educators. Smart rules, flexible reminders, and deep AppleScript support allow automating even complex repeating tasks. And with its fast, reliable, and secure synchronization users keep their data available on all their Macs. DEVONthink To Go for iPad and iPhone completes the DEVONthink ecosystem.

  • Keep your data together in one place
  • Scan your paper, archive your email
  • Let artificial intelligence help you organize your data
  • Automate tasks with smart rules and reminders
  • Sync your data to all your devices, fast and secure
  • Share your data with anyone, whether they use Mac or PC

New in DEVONthink 3.9

Making connections between documents, including being able to move efficiently between passages or to a made annotation, is an important part of knowledge management. DEVONthink 3.9 brings deep linking via selection and annotation links for PDFs. Using the extended URL scheme it is possible to link to selected text or annotation from any other app supporting URLs, e.g., to-do managers, outliners, and more. For formats other than PDF, linked annotations are another way for adding context to documents. Version 3.9 adds a command for quickly inserting highlights summaries into annotations and improves working with Markdown annotations.

When searching from the toolbar, it is now possible to exclude subgroups to search only in the given location. The Sorter allows editing notes taken as Markdown in WYSIWYG, and for easier sharing, the context menu for items in lists contains a Share submenu. Other Markdown editing enhancements include better automatic naming of created document and improved MathJAX parsing. In all text-based formats, a new command lets the user quickly jump to a line by its line number.

A new Attachments inspector lists media or other attachments in document types like RTFD, and the Properties pane can now be found in the Info inspector. The Annotations inspector no longer lists attachments and multimedia files, and sorts listed items more naturally.

Clipping web content more reliably strips consent banners and produces better results for dynamic content like, e.g., Medium posts. Articles retrieved by RSS from Mastodon receive better automatic names. In the web interface of DEVONthink Server, Markdown previews no longer lose their scroll position when editing the document.

The update, which also improves the reliability and performance, is free for existing users and highly recommended.
