Exactly twelve weeks ago we published the first public beta of the fourth generation of DEVONthink. Many of you already joined us for the public beta, gave the new features a test ride, and helped us fix bugs. Now the beta phase is over and we can finally send DEVONthink 4.0 Copernicus* to the stars! Thank you very much for traveling with us.
Our new generation of DEVONthink is more modern, smarter, and comes with countless new features — from support for generative AI models to versioning and audit-proof databases. We’ve also improved the text editors, created new automation capabilities, completely rewritten the web interface, redesigned the Help viewer, and much more.
Feel free to take a look at the product page and download DEVONthink 4 today. As before, you can test-drive it for 30 days or 150 hours of runtime, whichever is later, before it requires a valid license code for one of the three editions. It then adjust its feature set according to the entered license. And in case you already own DEVONthink 3, we’ve prepared discounted upgrade options for you, of course. The trial time does not start anew if you have already used it up during the public beta phase.
* We’re dedicating this version to the Copernicus lunar crater and its namesake, the Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus (1473–1543), who revolutionized our understanding of the universe. Contrary to the prevailing view that the Earth was the center of everything, he proposed that the Earth revolved around the Sun. This crater, with its rays extending across the lunar surface, is as notable as the groundbreaking ideas of the man it honors.
Be Creative, Use AI
Integrate your preferred generative AI model into DEVONthink 4. Have texts summarized in chat, get tags assigned, or interactively ’talk to your documents‘. Search using natural language or incorporate AI actions into your automations. With image generation, create relevant visuals for your materials directly within the program. DEVONthink supports online models such as ChatGPT, Claude, or Mistral AI as well as locally installed models via engines such as Ollama or LM Studio. You decide whether and how you want to use them. AI remains a private matter.
Perfectly Safe, Alone and in a Team
When you edit documents, DEVONthink 4 automatically keeps older versions of your documents, so you can return to them at any time. Audit-proof databases prevent documents from being edited and log deletions. They are the perfect place to store financial documents or other materials with special requirements.
Working in a team? DEVONthink 4 Server comes with a completely redesigned web interface and is even better designed for teamwork. From any number of workplaces, with any modern web browser on any operating system.
Search, Link, Automate
Search even more effectively; DEVONthink now finds PDF documents even without prior OCR. Explore the connections between your documents in the new interactive Graph inspector and integrate AI actions into your automations, using new actions, triggers, and placeholders. Save frequently used batch processing workflows to quickly reuse them at any time.
A New License Model
To provide you with new versions more quickly in the future without having to save up features, starting with DEVONthink 4.0 Copernicus we’re switching to a new license model. With the purchase of a license, you will now receive app updates for one year and if you extend the updates before the time’s up we’ll give you a discount on the extension as well as multi-year options. Should you decide to not extend them, don’t worry, you can continue to enjoy DEVONthink and come back later when the time is right.
