If you weren’t aware of it already, there was a problem on the internet yesterday for a couple of hours. A little problem in terms of describing it: Amazon Web Services (AWS) was “having problems”. However, it was really a big problem for any app or service relying on the S3 services. One of those services was us. Our downloads were unavailable for a period of time. Slack, Trello, Time Inc., and others were affected. Some even experienced some home automation problems because they relied on the IFFFT website. (mehr)
Last week, we talked about editing options in DEVONthink: What happens when you double-click a file (and why) as well as the hotkey to open a file in the system default application. But there are also times when you want to open a document in an application other than the system default. (mehr)
In DEVONthink, if a type of file can be edited in DEVONthink, it will open in a DEVONthink document window when the file is double-clicked. This makes it easy to isolate a document for editing while allowing you to keep your place in the other window. It also allows you to keep working directly in DEVONthink without having to jump back and forth between applications. (mehr)
If you’re an Apple Notes user but would like to move completely to DEVONthink and DEVONthink To Go now, this update is for you. DEVONthink 2.9.9 adds an option for importing notes and attachments from Apple Notes. It honors the folder structure in Apple Notes and uses formatted notes to preserve formatting in a future-proof format. (mehr)
Recently, we had a customer expressing a desire to have black-and-white PDFs. Our head developer, Christian, suggested running a Quartz filter on them. When you export out of Apple’s Preview, you have the option of applying a Quartz filter to adjust the output. (mehr)
Mailplane is a probably the best way to use Gmail on a Mac. Version 3.6.9 adds native support for DEVONthink Pro and Pro Office: Open a message in Mailplane and choose Edit > Save to DEVONthink to save the message as webarchive to DEVONthink. The document includes a link back to the original message in Gmail. You can also send downloaded attachments to your DEVONthink inbox. (mehr)
DEVONthink Pro Office stores email messages in their original formats. If you want to keep your messages in an easier to handle file format one option is to ‘print’ them to PDF and keep the PDF instead. Converting hundreds or even thousands of messages manually is a painful process, however. But, as long as Apple hasn’t killed Mac automation, there’s a solution for this: … (mehr)
David Sparks and Katie Floyd invited Stuart Ingram to their popular Mac Power Users podcast and discuss his approach to DEVONthink. You know Stuart from his excellent series A User’s Journey into DEVONthink here in this blog. Stuart addresses David’s concerns about ‘everything buckets’ and lays out how he uses DEVONthink Pro Office and why. It’s just 80 minutes and you won’t want to miss it. (mehr)
The Global Inbox is a built-in database, provided so you can start working (or playing!) in DEVONthink the moment you launch it. For DEVONthink Pro and Pro Office, it is ideally used as a temporary storage location — a place for transient or unfiled data. It’s a great place to capture miscellanous data when you’re rabbit-trailing around the web too. (mehr)
We had a support ticket with a person who had a simple request: “I have a selection in a Smart Group. How do I move it to a database?” I responded but as I did, I realized (yet again) how much flexibility we have built into DEVONthink. Here are a few ways to accomplish this: … (mehr)
